Kallpachacuy is a Quechua word that means “strength”. At Kallarisunchis, it is the name of a group of older adults who live in very low income households, some living in extreme poverty. Many of them have been abandoned by their families and live alone.
This group started meeting together and formed an association. Through this organization they can confront their problems together and find ways to meet their needs. Kallarisunchis supports this group of older adults by providing training to their leaders and helping with their projects and activities.
Presently, thanks to the support Kallarisunchis provides and connecting them with other institutions and churches, the members of Kallpachacuy have experienced improved health, provision of food and clothing as well as other necessities. Thanks to Kallpachacuy, they have a renewed purpose for living and can enjoy the company of others. Some even participate in the savings program offered by Kallarisunchis.
The dream of Kallpachacuy is that someday they will have their own senior center where they can hold their meetings and have a place where those most in need can stay when they have nowhere else to go. Presently, they meet in our rented space in the Plaza de Armas de San Jeronimo, Cusco.
